Falls Creek Ski Resort is one of Australia's most extensive alpine resorts. It towers above Rock Valley Lake in Victoria and covers an area of about 1,111 acres. The snow area is endowed with breathtaking alpine scenery and has some of the best skiing and snowboarding facilities in the Southern Hemisphere.

It offers an extensive range of accommodation options, including hotels, resorts, and serviced apartments. There is also a range of dining options at the resort, so you can enjoy great food regardless of where you are staying.

The resort offers a wide variety of activities for non-skiers, including off-piste skiing, snowboarding, and tobogganing. Other activities include cross country skiing, hiking, and mountain biking (during the summer). The Falls Creek resort is the official training ground for Australia’s National Cross-Country Ski Team. It also hosts the yearly Kangaroo Hoppet, the largest winter sports event in the Southern hemisphere.

Falls Creek Terrain Characteristics

The Falls Creek Resort is the largest in Victoria, occupying 450 hectares of skiable terrain. It has 92 marked trails served by 14 lifts, which ascend an average of a 380-meter vertical. 

The variable terrain has well-groomed downhill trails ideal for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities and levels. The snow area’s runs are classified as follows:

The ski resort is best known for its wide range of beginner slopes. In addition, it has a dedicated beginners’ area, making it popular with families, first-time skiers, and snowboarders. These pistes are located on the far side of the mountain, including in the Main Village. 

Its 2.2-kilometer green run is the longest in Australia, offering unforgettable thrills to beginners and intermediates. In addition, Panorama Park is the largest park in the resort and also the longest, providing S to M-sized features. It lies to the left of the Panorama beginner runs and has excellent continual park laps.

The ski field also has challenging terrain that intermediate and advanced skiers can enjoy. There are a few mellow and well-groomed black runs for intermediates to advanced skiers. Falls Creek’s Poma ride is the longest in Australia, allowing advanced snow lovers access to the black runs.

Lifts at Falls Creek Resort

Falls Creek Resort’s terrain is serviced by a fleet of high-speed lifts, with most of the lifts’ operations being concentrated around the lake. It’s also easy to enter or exit the ski village,  using one of many lifts

The following are the lifts in operation at the snow field:

  • High-speed quads, which include Eagle Express and Halley's Comet
  • Fixed grip quads which include Drovers Dream, Towers, Ruined Castle, Scott, and Summit

How To Get A Ski Pass To the Falls Creek Resort

During the winter months, only one road provides access in or out of the resort. For this reason, access to Falls Creek is restricted to ski pass holders. In addition, you'll need to pay for overnight parking services if you wish to stay overnight at the resort.

To get a day Falls Creek lift Pass or Season pass, you can visit the Falls Creek Alpine Resort website to order online. However, keep in mind that if you order the pass online, you’ll still need to get a physical pass card that you’ll use to gain access to services such as lifts.

Falls Creek Ski Resort is located in the Alpine National Park in northeastern Victoria. It is nestled within the Australian Alps, about a 5-hour drive from Melbourne (387 kilometers away) and about 672 kilometers from Sydney. The closest town is Mt. Beauty, which is about 30 kilometers to the north of the resort.

Many convenient options for getting to Falls Creek exist, including flying in by road, shuttle busses, and private transfers.

Flying in Via Albury, Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra

Albury Airport (ABX / YMAY) is the closest airport to Falls Creek, with alternative airports being those in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. You can also book connecting flights to Albury from these airports.

For vehicles accessing Falls Creek or staying overnight at the resort, it is mandatory to carry tire chains. You can hire tire chains from several outlets in Mt Beauty or Myrtleford.

RESORT ENTRY CONDITIONS

The Howman’s Gap Resort Entry gate is 7 kilometers (approximately 4 miles) from Falls Creek. Once you reach this point, you can purchase your entry pass at the resort’s office. However, for convenience, you can buy your entry pass online.
